Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands Experience

nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image

Overview

Providenciales is a small island amongst the Turks and Caicos Islands with an area of 38 square miles according to wikipedia. Trip advisor has awarded this destination with the best beach destination in world for 2011 and 2012.  This prompted a visit from ChicVoyage to the island in October 2011. Greg Hung shares his thought on this visit.

Our review of Providenciales

In our experience Providenciales is still a relatively uncrowded destination and an unspoiled gem. The main attraction for coming to this island is the beautiful uncrowded white flour sands of Grace Bay beach. The warm unspoiled turqoise water is a joy to take a dip in to cool off. The sunset offer a scenic backdrop as the warm colorful skyline reflects off the ocean. This calm ocean, perfect warm temperatures, and scenery are to be experienced and photographed. In October the temperature was sunny and hot and was approximately around 25-30 degrees Celsius (77 – 86 Fahrenheit), and enhancing your enjoyment are the ocean breezes and lack of humidity. Frommer’s travel guide claims that Turks and Caicos receives an average of 350 days of sunshine, so there is a good probability to get your sunshine. However, the islands are also known for a hurricane season from June – November, but satellite forecasts are available to mitigate this during your planning. For more weather detail check Frommer’s travel guide.
Tip: Bring bug/mosquito spray especially during the evening if you are down by the beach area when they tend to come out.

Premier Scuba Diving destination

For those that can swim and seek adventure the ocean has more to offer. Snorkeling is one way to venture further away from the shore to search for some ocean life. Club Med offers daily snorkeling excursions with larger groups where you can expect a boat to take you out to the snorkeling location. Providenciales is also known to be a premier scuba diving destination. An article from Frommer supports this point, and claims the late Jacques Cousteau, a diving expert cited Providenciales as one of the 10 best diving sites in the world.  Greg Hung, Owner of ChicVoyage, had a chance to sample the scuba diving first hand after acquiring his PADI certification from Vancouver and had this to say. “I love Vancouver, but the scuba diving experience here in October at dive sites such as Porteau Cove was nowhere close to what I experienced at Providenciales with the Club Med team”. The visibility in the  Providenciales ocean was awesome, the temperature was warm enough to swim in my bathing suit without any wet or dry suit, and I saw a diverse variety of ocean life down there. From the beach you have direct access to the ocean, and on my scuba diving experience a boat takes you out to the diving destination. This gives you time to enjoy a coffee, get your gear on, and when you are ready you give right off the boat into warm clear ocean and enjoy the sea life. Amazing experience”
Visiting some of the more well known beach-front properties Providenciales appears to cater to families and adult couples. However, for those party seekers you can find a regular happening night life at the Club Med resort, where each night has a different theme with good quality live entertainment and energy from the staff and fellow travelers.  We share some pictures of the experience, but If you would like to experience Providenciales from the comfort of home and learn insider trips we encourage you to purchase ChicVoyage in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands 2011 from our travel store. We leave you with a video that Maxwell, one of the talented staff on the Club Med team has created of the diving experience.

Singapore Experience

nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image nivo slider image

Overview

Based on conversations about Singapore with Canadians in the past year or so the perception is that Singapore is a clean and modern city known for their strict laws on caning and chewing gum. After experiencing and visiting Singapore ChicVoyage feels that this country has so much more to offer than to be known for strict chewing gum regulations. Please refer to this Wikipedia article if you want to educate yourself on the chewing gum ban in more detail.

Singapore is a small island (272 sq miles) city-state that is 85 miles north of the equator in South East Asia.  It is a well located geographical hub for traveling to countries in Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Primary Languages: English, Mandarin Chinese
Currency: Singapore Dollar

Our review of Singapore

Prior to traveling to Singapore I began further up north in Beijing and made my way down south through Shanghai and then to Singapore during December 2011.  The weather went from cooler to warmer the further south I went. The weather forecast was a cloudy and humid mid 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit), but this was a welcome change from the below freezing temperatures felt in Beijing evenings.

If you are an English speaker traveling through Mainland China even in modern large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou you will appreciate that English is the main language you’ll hear in Singapore. Being able to converse fluently in your native language is a key factor in shaping your experience in your destination. At your most basic needs level it makes it easier to survive for smaller things that you may take for granted. Things such as being able to speak with locals for directions, places to eat, or where to find certain medication. Useful smart phone applications like Yelp and websites that North Americans take for granted are not yet available in parts of Asia and most likely written in Chinese. At a higher level it will help to build social connections. This being said you may find it challenging to understand the English of some locals at first. A few times I had to ask them to repeat their sentences, but it will be no more challenging than interpreting someone speaking English in another accent.

The primary method of transportation in Singapore is the MRT subway or taxi. It is uncommon to see rental cars in Singapore and owning a local car is considered a luxury. Fortunately the MRT is efficient and clean with well-located stations throughout Singapore. The MRT was used as our primary transportation during our filming, with taxi’s being used a secondary transportation.

Tip: Keep a copy of the MRT on your smartphone if you have one. The stations have a numbered code that can be easier to remember than the name. Here is a copy courtesy of Wikitravel.

The taxi’s are easy to catch at designated stands and are relatively inexpensive compared to North American standards. Generally you may find Singapore more expensive compared to mainland cities in China like Beijing, but similar to North America price ranges.

Must-see attractions

There are plenty of tourist attractions near the South of the island that are located within close proximity to each other. One recommended area is Raffles place. The area is walking friendly and you will get a glimpse of the business district and find your way down to the Singapore river.  At the Singapore River there are plenty of lunch options to choose from, and after we recommend taking the river ride. The ride will let you see some of the more popular attractions such as the Esplanade, Clark quay, and the modern Marina Bay Sands hotel very efficiently. In our travel film ChicVoyage in Singapore, local insider, Caslin Liu reveals the sex symbol of Singapore, which is visible from the ride.  Hint: it involves the Esplanade

Tip: It is surprisingly difficult to find free wifi. Even at starbucks you will be required to fill out long web forms on your phone. If you have an unlocked phone purchase a sim card at the airport. This will give you a Singapore number and a data plan to use the internet. Use it sparingly as it runs out quickly and can add up.

A must-see area for travelers who love colorful scenic aerial views is the Marina Bay skypark. The skypark is located at the top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. The modern architecture of Singapore comes to life as you get to enjoy a pretty illuminated water landscape of the Marina Bay waterfront. On your left you will see the world’s largest outdoor pool at 55 story’s high. The skypark is one of my highlights of the Singapore trip. It is also worth exploring the promenade and if you’ve travelled extensively in Asia Louis Vutton is a common sight; however, this one is known as Louis Vutton Island or Louis Vutton Island maison and is located on the Marina Bay promenade.

Sentosa is an island the Singapore government developed for tourism and is located further south of Marina Bay. It offers upscale hotel accommodation, beaches, theme parks, and activities such as man-made surfing.  In summary, it is family friendly and has something to do for just about everyone. We spent a day at Sentosa going out for lunch with my family and was slight disappointed as I was expecting white powder beaches and more upscale waterfront dining options. There is a cable car that crosses Sentosa island to the Harbourfront. If you keep on going on the cable car you will be taken to Mount Faber. This is a designated park with an upscale restaurant and hotel and a hiking trail known as the Henderson waves.

Bottom Line

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Singapore. It is not blessed with the natural beauty of Vancouver, British Columbia. However, the city has no shortage of modern beautiful architecture to snap pictures of. We found Singapore lives up to its reputation as a clean and safe city. There certainly is the feeling that Singapore is a wealthy modern prosperous cosmopolitan country. The city has a well-designed subway transportation system and plenty of affordable taxis in the city.  There is plenty of shopping options especially at the Orchard area there are several air-conditioned multi-level malls for blocks on both sides of the street. The tourist attractions are within close proximity to each other.  The weather is consistently warm being in a sub tropical rainforest climate. Being a primarily English speaking country is a key benefit and much appreciated in Asia. In ChicVoyage in Singapore Caslin believes that Singapore is a country that is designed to welcome tourists and people of other cultures. Based on our time here we can certainly support this point. In fact, ChicVoyage wouldn’t mind calling Singapore our second home in Asia.  If you enjoyed this content and found it useful and would like to see and experience even more you can purchase our high definition film Chicvoyage in Singapore and picture sets  available at our travel store. As a bonus we have included a wine and dine experience video with Caslin Liu and her friends in Singapore below. This will give you a glimpse of the Chic side of Singapore.
Tip: Cars will honor pedestrian lights unlike Mainland China

Overview

Overview of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a large city under 7 million located on the South East coast of China. It was a former British colony until the handover to China. Before ChicVoyage decided to visit we had heard that Hong Kong was a fast paced international city that had a lot of offer for those interested in food, good shopping, careers, and nightlife. We spent the majority of our time in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, but also ventured out to the Stanley waterfront in South Hong Kong Island.

As soon as I set foot in the airport I could feel the international energy. Similar to Singapore you will find that you can get by with ease speaking only English. The other main language is Cantonese, which you will also hear during your time here. Also like Singapore, Hong Kong has an excellent subway metro system called the MTR. It is uncommon for locals and visitors to drive a car in the main areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Unlike Singapore, Hong Kong will not look and feel as clean, but the trade-off is that it is a more liberal city.

In Hong Kong I arrived in New Years Eve so we wanted to fully experience the nightlife energy of Hong Kong Island the first couple of days.  The first couple of nights did not disappoint. I arrived Friday night and very soon after arriving my local friend Gordon picked me up at my hotel for dinner at Soho. Soho is the entertainment district in Hong Kong Island located within the Central area.  Our next stop was Lan Kwai Fong (LKF), which is a popular expat hangout for nightlife, clubbing, and dining. LKF was packed with people on the street that looked ready to party.

You can expect hookah lounges, and member only multilevel clubs that offer great music, international crowds, and roof top terraces. Our New Years Eve was spent at the Hyde, a 2 level bar located in Central, Hong Kong.  Celebrating a new years countdown at a good club with friends in a city like Hong Kong is highly recommended for those that especially enjoy a good time and unique experiences . The music was great and kept the crowd dancing, people were friendly and international, and there was a plethora of different experiences and activities one different floors and spaces in the venue. We were lucky the Hong Kong crowd gave plenty of love to the camera that will be showcased in  “ChicVoyage in Hong Kong  New Years Eve”.

If you enjoy colorful international lounges as much as we do you will enjoy checking out the Ozone sky bar, located in the Ritz Carlton in Kowloon. The Ritz Carlton claims this is the highest bar in the world. It is located 18 floors higher than 100th floor observatory deck in the ICC building so this is one indication that is indeed closer to the sky than most bars.  This bar offers a colorful dynamic atmosphere, an international crowd, and a great view of Hong Kong Island

To get a good feel of Hong Kong we recommend doing the double decker bus ride experience. You can catch it from the West side of Hong Kong Island and head to the east. It is an experience in itself and will allow you to soak in more of Hong Kong at a digestible pace.

Tip: go on the 2nd level in the front seat for the best seat in the house

Other experiences that are worth trying are the star ferry that crosses from Victoria harbor to Kowloon. You will get to see the famous skyline of Hong Kong from both Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, and it is low cost. If you enjoy fireworks then check out the evening daily show known as the “Symphony of Lights” that is set against the skyline. The show holds a Guinness World record for the world’s largest permanent light and sounds show. To find a natural elevated view of Hong Kong head up to the Victoria peak and snap some pictures.

I have heard from people in Vancouver, South Africa, and Mainland China that Hong Kong is a great destination for shopping. Shopping is a broad category in itself, and we would love to get some input on this area. For camera equipment I did not find any bargains; however I did get custom tailored shirts made to order in 1 day. There are companies such as Maxwell that will travel through major cities in Canada during certain dates during the year, but take several months to arrive with an added cost of customs tax.  In Hong Kong, you will most likely find more patterns, faster service, and more customization options. (For example: different patterns on the inner cuff). A friend referred me to Jantzen tailor. I had a very good experience and have no problem recommending them

Our expectations for food were very high. I sampled Trip Advisors #1 restaurant as of Dec 2011 Din Tai Fung. This experience lived up to expectations where you can see some of what we ate in the pictures, and more coverage in the film.  I also sampled some Xiao Long Bao for a snack from a restaurant called “Crystal Jade La Mian Xia Long Bao”.  This was ordered to go due to a very long line up and enjoyed at the Star bucks next door. Delicious.  There is no “Yelp” service available at the time of our visit, but I was adventurous one night and went to a Chinese name only restaurant across the Dorsett Regency hotel in Kennedy town and managed to figure out how to order dumpling noodle soup. The price was great, the food delicious, and although it wasn’t a fancy restaurant it was clean and I was alone at the time and was seated at a round table with a stranger. This is not unusual in Hong Kong, and I treasured this authentic experience in Hong Kong. I recommend picking a sure bet or two and also being adventurous by trying different types of food while you’re in Hong Kong and shaping your own food experience.

Our local insider Gordon gave me a choice of the Big Buddha, a famous tourist attraction or the Stanley waterfront.  I opted for the Stanley Waterfront as I love the water and I wanted to show the world a side of Hong Kong that hasn’t received much attention. The Stanley waterfront did not disappoint.  Expect to find a quiet and relaxing vibe with families and couples walking their kids and dogs. European style patio side dining with plenty of people watching opportunities and if you head close to the water you can enjoy the beach. A highly recommend surprise in Hong Kong.

Guangzhou

I planned to take the train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and stay overnight. I would recommend two nights to give yourself more time to look around and extend the rest between train trips if you are carry luggage.

Tip: When you get off at the stop for Guangzhou walk a bit further to look for an official taxi. Do not go with the first guy that takes your luggage and leads you to a car in the parking lot. He will quote you a much more expensive trip to get to your destination

The Shamian island is a tranquil island that is relaxing to walk around and enjoy the neo classical architecture. If you walk until the edge of the island you may find some people performing Tai chi or martial arts. The Pearl River is worth seeing if you are already on the island. A metro stop is under 10 minutes walk away and if you are familiar with the Hong Kong metro you will not have a problem understanding how to get around. If you enjoy culture and history the Sun Yat Sen Memorial is worth your time. The Yuexiu park is very large and can consume a large amount of your time if you are not focused. The Five Goats is challenging to find and is worthwhile if you have value finding the symbol of the city.  The Canton Tower is also accessible via the Metro and is worth the visit to see and take photos of this sexy colorful tower as well as to enjoy the views that is offers. It was getting late on Shamian island and I managed to find a late night snack at Lucy’s. Lucy’s is well viewed on Trip Advisor at #8 out of 197 restaurants in Guanghzou and offers Chinese and Western dishes. I opted for a dish of some of the best rice beef noodles I have ever had.

Tip: Although only about 2.5 hours away from Hong Kong Guangzhou uses the Chinese Yuan (Renminbi) as their currency. Remember to purchase Chinese Yuan dollars.

Our time in Guangzhou was short, but we enjoyed our stay here. If you are in Hong Kong it is definitely worth your while to come and visit the third largest city (12.78 million) in China for a day or two. Guangzhou does not get as much global attention as Shanghai and Beijing, but the view of the modern colorful skyline will raise your awareness of how large this city actually is. The video below is a trailer for “ChicVoyage in Hong Kong NYE 2011 Featuring Guangzhou”. It is short and fun glimpse of footage you can expect in the film. Enjoy.

Vancouver is where ChicVoyage was born and is currently based which means this city holds a special place and deserves a special write-up. For 2012 Vancouver was both on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2012 livability and Mercer’s 2011 Quality of living survey.

Our review of Vancouver – Written By Greg Hung

The weather plays an essential factor for both locals and travelers on the experience you will have in Vancouver.  The best times to visit are from June to September in our opinion if you enjoy the sun and want to take advantage of the outdoors and beautiful natural landscape that Vancouver is blessed with. Local Vancouverites enjoy the weather and try to take advantage of it by getting for activities such as hiking on trails, rollerblading on the seawall, and enjoying a drink on the patio.
It is usually around October when the the weather becomes cooler, darker, and very wet until April. It seems as if locals have learned to cope with this weather in exchange for our wonderful summers. There are some people who will make it up to the local mountains to enjoy skiing and snowboarding where the weather becomes cold enough to support snow.
Food

According to Wikipedia Vancouver is one of the ethnically diverse cities in Canada and the we like to think that this resulted in a rich variety of available food choices from North American West Coast ( Fusion and locally sourced ingredients), American, East Indian, Greek, Middle Eastern, African, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, French, Taiwanese, and Malaysian. Certain districts in Vancouver such as Richmond are known by locals for for a great selection of Chinese food. At the low end there are fast food choices in Asian malls such as Aberdeen’s food court, Parker place, Richmond Public market, and Yaohan. There are also moderately priced options at malls and mall plazas such as Dynasty Restaurant, Thai Son, Pearl Castle, and Shanghai Wonderful.  Some of the more well known restaurants are Sun Sui Wah for Chinese Dim Sum and a top rated restaurant such as Shanghai River.
There are also certain streets or areas that are known to have a large cluster and diverse selection of restaurants. Main Street is one such example from 33rd avenue all the way until the intersection is Kingsway has an option for someone. The West Broadway and the intersection of Cambie and west has plenty of choices. The trendy area of Kitsilano particularly between West  of  intersection of Burrard and 4th avenue.
When you make your way to Vancouver  Downtown there are several areas in downtown worth visiting. Yaletown is known for it’s broad selection of mostly high end restaurants. The West end area which is west of the intersection of Burrard and Davie offers blocks of almost all restaurants. Robson is the primarily street that runs through downtown Vancouver and all along Robson you will find places to eat and shop. Once you get West of Robson and Bute you will notice that Robson offers a generous amount of Korean choices. Other areas worth doing a Yelp search in include Gastown, West Vancouver, and Commercial Drive. Here we feature a video clip of  the Bluewater Cafe, which is one of top Seafood restaurants in Yaletown
Nightlife
The Granville entertainment district which begins south of Robson and runs until the Granville Street bridge leading out of downtown is the mainstream location for nightlife. On Granville you will find the

Overview of The Grand Canyon

By Greg Hung

Day 1

The idea of going to Grand Canyon came after a scheduled Las Vegas trip. This trip was schedule for April and I was hopeful that there would be Sunny weather. I decided to visit the Grand Canyon Southern Rim to take this amazing attraction off my bucket list. I booked a car rental from Las Vegas airport and proceeded to take the 5-6 hour drive from Las Vegas to Bright Angel Lodge at the Grand Canyon National Park. I had missed my first flight from Bellingham to Las Vegas and so I began this drive around 9pm. There a long stretches of this drive especially the last hour where it is pitch black. Watch your speed on these roads as there are wild life that cross the roads and  are patrolled by police. I got freaked out when I saw a pair of eyes that I think came from an Elk that I almost knocked over. I actually got pulled over by an officer, and I was fortunate enough to get let off without a ticket for the first time. I arrived inside the park gate around 2am in the morning with the toll gates closed and checked into the Bright Angel Lodge for a night. The staff at the lodge was friendly and looked forward to some sleep before waking up at 5am for sun rise.
Tip: Rent a GPS device if you are making the drive from to the Grand Canyon
Tip: Drive under the posted speed limit for your safety and that of the wild life as well to avoid speeding tickets
Tip: The Bright Angel Lodge is an excellent choice for great value. Book well in advance to get rooms.
Tip: Get a guide to the park from your hotel. It will help you plan your trip

Day 2

I woke up early in the morning for the sunrise at the Grand Canyon. One of the benefits of the Bright Angel lodge is the amazing proximty to the Grand Canyon view. You are literally a minute walk away or less depending on your room from the Grand Canyon views. It was cold in the morning, but I was happy it was dry. It was an amazing sun rise and when I saw my first view of the Canyon I was in awe. I have never seen anything like this and if you watch the Grand Canyon I believe you will agree this is awe inspiring. I had a good breakfast at the Bright Angel lodge to provide fuel for the day. The plan was to film footage of the main view points along the desert view drive. I was told by the staff at Bright Angle lodge that you will get amazing views of the Canyon at most view points, but the Watch Tower. My first stop was the Moran point and after a series of stops I finished at the popular Desert View Watchtower stop. I got there late just before sunset and the tower was close. You can expect a good walk from the parking lot to the Watchtower viewpoint and fresh spring water taps to refresh you. It definitely worth the trip here. I spent night two at the Yavapai lodge as there wasn’t room available at Bright Angel. The Yavapai doesn’t offer the prime location that Bright Angel does and expect to pay more, but your rooms are close to the market area.
Tip: Don’t settle for cafeteria food at the Yavapai. There are many options in the park that are a short drive away
Day 3
On day 3 the plan was to do a quick hike. I went to the visitor center where you can park your car and take a bus shuttle to the hiking location. I picked the South Kalibab trail and took a quick hike down. Along the path I bumped into people that were doing mule rides, an interesting experience to try for next time. You can different views from the hiking trails that descend down that are worth your time if you want some good pictures.
Tip: Come well prepared for the hike. Sun glasses, sun screen, water, appropriate hiking shoes are some suggestions.
I recommend watching the Grand Canyon video if you need some inspiration to visit!

Currency: Hong Kong Dollar

The show holds a Guinness World record for the world”s largest permanent light and sounds show.

Enjoy.
